As I discussed in a previous entry I have been trying imitation meat products, these are products that are made from either vegetables or tofu and are made to resemble meat. I have found one that warrants sharing. Actually, I should say my wife found it.
My wife and I were at a local "big box" store and she brought me a can of chili and said, "Check out the indigence, this chili is vegan." We tried some later that day (I was less than optimistic) but I was pleasantly surprised.
I'm going to give a shameless plug to this brand of chili even though they are not advertising with me (I'm not getting paid to promote them) I'm doing this because this stuff was flat-out AWESOME. The brand is "Amy's" and the chili that we tried is called Amy's Organic Vegan Chili As I said I got it at my local "big box" store but I would imagine you could find it about anywhere or you can check out their web site.
This is authentic chili, the look, the texture, and even the taste. I was so pleased with this, I could just imagine my favorite vegan "hot dog" on a vegan bun and smothered with vegan chili. Now if only they made vegan cheese that was actually palatable (cuz the stuff I've tried has been crap) I could actually have a completely vegan Chili Cheese Dog.
On to other stuff...
I have been trying imitation meat products but I have also been sticking to a strict vegan diet and have been juicing as well. I would say that I have two meals a day that are juice (usually breakfast and dinner) and one (usually lunch) that is strictly vegan.
I mention this because I created two breakfast juices that I have to share with you. I got a couple of pretty good photos of both.
The first could just be called a watermelon and cantaloupe freeze
This is simple, one cup each watermelon, cantaloupe, and crushed ice.
Juice the melons and toss into a blender with crushed ice and there you have it.
The next again is made with watermelon (can you tell I just LOVE watermelon? This time of year I just live for the stuff) this was made by juicing watermelon, strawberry, and black grapes. I'm not sure the quantity of each though because I was using the "handful" rule, that is to say "a handful of this, a handful of that, a couple handfuls of this other thing." I mixed it until I liked the color of it. I then threw the juice into a blender with crushed ice and what came out was not only wonderful tasting but was really very pretty as well.
I'm actually really enjoying this experiment, I'm discovering all kinds of new and interesting flavors, flavors that I would not have otherwise discovered. The Vegan Experiment has definitely taken me out of my [food] comfort zone. I would recommend this to everyone.
As usual I would like to hear any comments or suggestions that you may have.
