The first day of the juice fast has been successfully completed, I'm well into day two. The good news is that this morning I was down two pounds. Losing two pounds in one day isn't bad, still I'm cautiously optimistic because my weight these days can vacillate so wildly.
I really thought the juice fast would be really difficult for me to do but I've found it rather easy (so far), yes I'm hungry but I'm dealing with it unexpectedly well.
The juice fast calls for drinking two 8 to 12 ounce fruit juices and two 8 to 12 ounce vegetable juices a day. The fruit juices I'm drinking in the morning and mid day and the veggie juices late afternoon and evening.
Most of the juice recipes I've been using have green apple as the foundation this is true even of the vegetable juices, I think it adds a tart flavor and picks the juice up a bit.
This morning (for two people) I used:
3 green apples
3 oranges
1/4 of a pineapple
1 Lemon
It was pretty good, it also was quite a "wake up" first thing in the morning. I don't remember even coffee being such a great eye-opener.
Mid Day (again for two people) I made a juice I had been thinking about and wanted to try.
3 green apples
1 red apple
2 bananas
1/2 a papaya (papaya is getting a lot of press lately, they're calling it a "super food" because of the amount of vitamins in it.)
I have found that bananas and papayas don't juice well, or perhaps at all, so what I did was juice the apples and then cut the banana and papaya into small chunks, I put the small chunks into a blender and poured in the apple juice and blended it together. If you like papaya give this a try it was really tasty!
Late Afternoon I skipped today because of being busy and I just spaced it.
Evening or Dinner I work nights and so I have my dinner alone so this was just for me:
3 Kayle leaves
1/2 a bell pepper (red)
6 carrots
1 jalapeno pepper (trust me on this, try it)
1/2 a lemon
1 small piece of Ginger
1/2 a beet
3 celery stalks
I just king of made this up as I went along but I did a good job, it's really very tasty.
I should also say that I am also using a Vegan protein shake mix once a day.
The instructions for a juice fast say not to add protein powder (or anything else) but I really feel the need to do this. When I was younger I did a lot of weight lifting and swimming, now that I'm trying to get fit again I have gone back to weight lifting and swimming (as well as biking) for exercise and, especially because of weight lifting, I feel the need to add protein to my diet, I feel like it's important.
